Encore 2 is a presentation design and delivery contest run by Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. The event is open for entry submission till October 15, 2011.

Why it is Important:

Presentations are needed everywhere – from sales pitches to teaching kindergarten kids to getting companies to clean up their act or people to change their mindset or motive people and organizations to come forward to invest for the cause.  Some of us make presentations are really awesome at it and some of us don’t quite cut it. Some of us can make the most mind-blowing design work but freeze up in front of a crowd. Others’ presentations look like a 5 year old’s drawing, but they can captivate the audience with their voice alone!

We want to find those folks who’ve got the best of both worlds and recognize their gift/skill.

Google Inc. is teaming up with MasterCard Inc. and Citigroup Inc. to embed technology in Android mobile devices that would allow consumers to make purchases by waving their smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Internet giant is aiming to make mobile payments easier in a bid to boost its advertising business. The planned payment system would allow Google to offer retailers more data about their customers and help them target ads and discount offers to mobile-device users near their stores, these people said.

The project, which is in its early stages, would allow holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards to pay for purchases by activating a mobile-payment application developed for one current model and many coming models of Android phones. The idea is to turn the phones into a kind of electronic wallet.

These phone users also would be able to get targeted ads or discount offers, which Google hopes to sell to local merchants. They also could manage credit-card accounts and track spending through an application on their smartphone, the people said.Google’s Android mobile-device software, which powers hundreds of different devices, supports this technology.

The Google-backed system, which is expected to be released this year, marks the latest effort to broaden the uses of smartphones for everyday activities—from chatting to emailing to shopping. The telecom, technology and financial-services industries all are looking for strategies to make them leaders in the evolving business of getting consumers to pay for products with their phones. Offering that option could allow device makers such as Apple Inc. to sell more of their phones.

The technology has been slow to catch on, however, partly because many consumers remain unaware of it, and they still need to pull out their card to use it.That potential, however, could raise privacy concerns.

Unlike some other forms of local advertising, the system would allow Google to prove whether ads targeted at certain groups of people led directly to in-store sales, these people said.

Google, by helping to facilitate transactions and redemptions of coupons and discounts, may also be able to gain insight into consumer-spending behavior, said a person familiar with the matter.

The local business ad market is a massive opportunity that has begun to be exploited by Internet companies such as Groupon Inc., social network Facebook Inc., and business-reviews site Yelp Inc.

Facebook users can use Facebook Credits to rent “The Dark Knight” through the movie’s official fan page on the social-networking site. This is something new that Warner Brothers is doing to attract new fans ans also opening up a new revenue source for the Internet social network by offering movies for viewing on Facebook.

The movie studio announced that they would offer movies for sale or rental for a brief period through its fan pages on the social-networking giant. The service will initially be available in the United States.

The first film available is “The Dark Knight.”The movie can be rented for 30 Facebook credits or $3, and Facebook users will have access to the movie for 48 hours through their accounts on the social network. Facebook Credits is an alternative payment option for more than 150 games and applications on the social network. It’s supported by games such as FarmVille and Mafia Wars.

“Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.” Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said.

Digital preservation is defined as: long-term, error-free storage of digital information, with means for retrieval and interpretation, for the entire time span the information is required for. It is the active management of digital information over time to ensure its accessibility. Digital preservation is the set of processes and activities that ensure continued access to information and all kinds of records, scientific and cultural heritage existing in digital formats. This includes the preservation of materials resulting from digital reformatting, but particularly information that is born-digital and has no analog counterpart.

Strategies for Digital Preservation
Following are some of the strategies that individuals and organizations may use to actively combat the loss of digital information:
1. Refreshing
Refreshing is the transfer of data between two types of the same storage medium so there are no bitrate changes or alteration of data. For example, transferring census data from an old preservation CD to a new one. Refreshing will likely always be necessary due to the deterioration of physical media.
2. Migration
Migration is the transferring of data to newer system environments. This may include conversion of resources from one file format to another (e.g., Microsoft Word to PDF or OpenDocument), from one operating system to another (e.g., Windows to Linux) or from one programming language to another (e.g., C to Java) so the resource remains fully accessible and functional.
3. Replication
Creating duplicate copies of data on one or more systems is called replication. Data that exists as a single copy in only one location is highly vulnerable to software or hardware failure, intentional or accidental alteration, and environmental catastrophes like fire, flooding, etc.
4. Emulation
Emulation is the replicating of functionality of an obsolete system. Emulators may be built for applications, operating systems, or hardware platforms. Emulation has been a popular strategy for retaining the functionality of old video game systems.
5. Metadata attachment
Metadata is data on a digital file that includes information on creation, access rights, restrictions, preservation history, and rights management. Metadata attached to digital files may be affected by file format obsolescence.
6. Trustworthy digital objects
Digital objects that can speak to their own authenticity are called trustworthy digital objects (TDOs). TDOs were proposed by Henry M. Gladney to enable digital objects to maintain a record of their change history so future users can know with certainty that the contents of the object are authentic.

World’s first eye-controlled laptop got unveiled in CeBIT, the tech expo organized in Germany. Lenovo and Tobii Technology come up together to create world’s first laptop with integrated eye control. Lenovo built the eye-controlled laptop using Tobii’s eye-tracking technology.

Rather than using a mouse or keyboard to select things on your notebook, you can use your eyes, which is not only faster, but more natural as well. It let the users depend on their eyes to point, select and scroll down a page.

How does it work? A person would just have to glance at an icon or application. The computer would then reveal more information regarding it. For example, you will be able to zoom in on objects and center on it with precision. You can simply look towards the bottom of the screen to have the task bar show up, look at the desired window you want to select, or look off the screen to the left to bring up the most widely used media options; the uses for eye control are really too numerous to count. The eye-control technology doesn’t aim to replace the mouse and keyboard, but to enhance it.

People who have tested the device say that it is highly accurate. Most exciting thing is the opportunities that eye control as part of natural user interfaces offers consumer electronics manufacturers in a range of product categories.

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phone can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing. The usual features familiar to instant messaging users—user profiles, online status indicators, and so on—are also included. Now, another feature of Skype is launched which enables teachers & students to connect them in a better way.

It has also been embraced by many educators who are using it in the classroom in some innovative ways.

Teachers use Skype to open their students to a world beyond the classroom walls. They use it to bring experts, authors, and guest instructors into the classroom, those who would never otherwise be able to visit the school. Students can take virtual field trips, if you will, via Skype as they’re connected to places through video chat. A Skype communication session can involve foreign language learning or a cultural exchange. It can connect classrooms across the city, state, country or around the world.

The company has just launched the beta version of Skype in the Classroom, an effort to support their efforts. The first step, Skype says, is building a directory of educators who use the VOIP service and want to connect their classrooms with others. Currently, many teachers turn to Facebook, Twitter, and their own personal and professional social networks in order to find other teachers to connect with, and it looks like Skype wants to make sure it’s providing its own matching services and helping provide the resources and skill-building so that teachers feel comfortable with video conferencing.

Teachers can sign up for the Skype in the Classroom beta by connecting their existing Skype accounts. Then, they can build out their profile with their interests, specialties, grade level, and location. Teachers can look through the directory and find others who can help with questions, resources, tips, and classroom visits.
